Croeso i Blwyddyn 6!
Welcome back to the Autumn Term. We have made a fantastic start to the year and I am very impressed with the pupils' positive attitudes and enthusiasm as they enter Year 6. We have a very exciting year ahead, with our class assembly, Stackpole and transition activities for secondary school.
This term we will be covering the following:
We will begin the year by looking at the novel 'Millions,' written by Frank Cottrell Boyce. We will be linking our literacy activities to this text, where we will make predictions, discuss characters and use empathy within our writing. There will drama activities, where we will portray emotions of different characters and we will be working on our inference skills. We will also be looking at oracy skills with debates and discussions in preparation for a debating competition we are hoping to enter in October.
We will be covering lots of mental strategies for addition and subtraction at the start of the term, looking at column addition and subtraction as well as working backwards to solve reasoning problems. We are focusing on learning our times tables with confidence, so we can answer problems with greater ease.
Our topic this term is ‘The World in Union.'
We had fun on our immersion day where we:
Learnt about countries that are part of The United Unions and different rights we have, made origami animals, painted blossom trees and learnt about Japanese writing to have a simple conversation.
We then discussed ideas that interested everyone and everyone had the opportunity to plan what they would like to learn this term linked to new skills taken from across the 6 areas of learning. Children were given the chance to come up with lesson ideas and staff have made the links between ideas and skills to ensure the learning is purposeful.
Please find below the pupils ideas that we will be looking at this term:
Our PE days are on a Wednesday and Friday. Please remember to have your kit in school on these days!
We will be working very hard on our spellings this year! Spellings will be given out on a Monday and need to be completed at home and returned to school on Thursday, ready for a spelling test on Friday.
Homework will be given out on a Friday, to be returned by the Tuesday of the following week. We use the Topmarks website in class, which has lots of games to practise our mental maths. This can be used at home for extra practise.
If there are any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.
