Year 5 Mrs O'Neill

Croeso Blwyddyn 5

Welcome back to the Autumn Term.

I hope you have all had a fantastic summer holiday and are ready for the challenges of Year 5. We have a jam packed fun term ahead. The children have been putting forward lots of (interesting) ideas for our topic 'World in Union'. We will be going on an adventure around the globe, exploring different countries, how people live around the globe both in the past and present and different climates.

Our P.E days this term will be on Monday and Tuesday so please do not forget your P.E kits on these days.

Spelling books will be given out on Monday and should returned to school for Thursday ready for our test on Friday. Homework will be given out every Friday.

Maths

This term we will be focusing on number. We will be practising and consolidating our knowledge of place value of up to 100, 000, rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and reading, writing numbers up to 100, 000. Children will be adding and subtracting and solving place value addition and subtraction problems.

Children will be tested on their number skills every week with a 'Learn Its' Test where they have to answer 72 questions in 100seconds. I can not stress enough how important it is for children to know instant recall of number facts and sentences. For example 6+7= 13 7+6= 13 13-7=6 13-6= 7.

Please continue to practise your times tables and read regularly as these are essential to help your child develop skills at home.

Literacy

Year 5 will be looking at Newspapers this term. Children will be considering what they read and will be responding orally and in writing. We will be using the characteristic features of newspaper reports and adapting our style to engage the reader when writing our own reports. As well as newspaper paper reports, Year 5 will look at stories from other cultures and learn how to write letters and write diary entries.
